Since 2009.
I walked into this old barbershop near my house and had my wife just hold up a pocket video recorder as I sat and got my first traditional Japanese haircut. Until that time I had gone to more modern and quick shops that only cut hair, no shampoo or shaves or ear cleaning.
I went back to the shop a few months later, but the man was just closing up shop. He was on his way to the emergency room.
He never re-opened. He retired and a year later they tore down the shop, and a young couple built a house. Soon after that they had a baby. I wave to them as pass by from time to time, but I always think of the old man and shop.
Chris (RenMan in Japan) was the model here. It was at my first regular barbershop, BAIKADOU, located in Nakamra Ward in Nagoya, Japan. It was run for about 60 years by Mr. and Mrs. Iwagaki until they retired in 2019. Mr. Iwagaki is not very active on the Internet so I was especially appreciative of his cooperation -- since he personally never saw the videos unlessI showed them to him on my iPhone when I visited him.
A barber newspaper did see the videos, however, and they came to his shop to visit him and interview him, and Mr. Iwagaki showed me the feature with a photo of him and Chris.
The podcast was started on Oct. 13, 2021, and will strive to bring you soothing sounds from ancient and modern Japan. Haircuts, shampoos, shaves, nature, temples, and more.
